South Beach I found to be less extreem and more viable in the long term.
Everyone I know who did Atkin's has gained all their weight back, while I am pretty stable on SBD.

I was wondering the same thing about the Atkins plan beause it does not let you eat alot of things. I also feel the carbs are to be to low also and may cause some vitamin deficiencies so I am planning on modifying it some and add some fresh fruit and whole wheat breads and some brown rice to because I feel I need these in my diet.
Tell me more about south beach? Are you trying to lose much or just a few lbs? I have 60 lbs. to lose so thats alot.
Tell me some things you cook to eat. Thats my main problem is what to cook because we always went out so much to eat and I very seldom ever cooked at home but now I am learning how to do just that.

I lost over 20lbs in less than 3 months.
The idea is to train you to think about which are healthy carbs and which are not, and then support you in making good decisions about what to eat.
I too had the problem of living "out". They have some super fast recipes generally I wouldn't spend more than 1/2 an hour for any meal including cooking time.
I took their recipes and work them to my tastes, i.e. their orange roughy with ginger and scallions became my wild salmon with ginger and scallions etc. I also added a few of my own, i.e. sole in lemon juice with cilantro. I couldn't be bothered with their snacks, which seemed a bit pavlovian to me (I hate waiting/thinking about food all day), so I just skipped them. I chose to occasionally use stevia as a natural sweetener. I had a lot of salads for lunch and, generally try not to eat within 3 hours of my bedtime. I made sure to have psylium daily, not only does it help with fiber, it fills you up. I also took daily vitamins to make sure I got everything I needed regularly.

Thanks for the info. I know I have to look at my eating in a whole new way now if I want to lose this weight and keep it off. I am only eating 1200 calories a day and it seems to be sastifying me really well and I eat low carb to. I checked out the south beach and I do like it alot better than than the Atkins plan so I have been following that plan now instead of the AStkins like i was trying to do at first.
I weighed in at my doctors yesterday and i had already lost three lbs. in a week. i was really proud of that.
write anytime and lets talks more about our eating plan.
hope to see you here again real soon.

we did really well on the SBD until we went to phase IV - eating anything we wanted anytime in any quantity.

we are going back to phase 1 this week, and as the rains end we'll be cycling more - gotta find a good rainy day exercise for us.

My boyfriend has lost over 130 since April 2005. He started going to Overeaters Annon.

He has eliminated all flour and sugar from his diet. He weighs eveything that he eats and he eats 3 meals a day.

He has 40 more lbs to go!

Myself, I need to lose about 20lbs. Since I moved about 6 months ago, I haven't really exercised. Now that the weather is getting better, I plan on getting into my routine of walking for an hour every day.

i go (off and on) to a nutritionist who is an expert in metabolism. thats the key. Once you know what your specific metabolism needs to burn the exess and not eat your muscles, you are in the golden zone.
I gotta lose 10 lbs, but more than that i need to transfer 5 to muscle. Its all about moving the bod daily, keeping the metbolism stoked properly, and staying out of the middle isles of the grocery store. (all the bad carbs are parked there).
Common sense and and a little discipline-- i could use more of that right now...

You all are just wonderful here. I am really trying to lose this weight of mine. I am beginning to have some health problems like high blood pressure and a elevated sugar level so getting these back down to normal is what I need to do and lose my weight to and just get healthy again and think of myself for a change. I have gone to long not watching my eating habits and now I am paying for it by weight gain and some unhealthy things happening to my body. Its time I take back my own body and health....

I think the south beach has really been a good plan for me with its low carb, I lost three lbs. last week with it. Now to look forward to the future and keep on trotting until i am down to where i need to be again and never looking back to any of my failures, those are all gone now for me, only positive things now in my life.

Thanks you all for being here for me.

Tell me some of your meal plans? i need ideas on what to make for evening dinner mostly.
At lunch I usually have a nice salad with some sort of meat on it, chicken or tuna etc.
Mornings I make omelets or some fruit and cottage cheese.

What do you all eat for breakfast? I need some ideas in that area to.
What do you eat for snacks? I hear nuts are good and fruit.

Ok I want to hear back from you all and I need all the help I can get with my eating so please be here to support me.

see you later and have a great Easter week-end.

I got the book, but I also just follow my instinct with what I'm allowed to go with.

They look like they are going for as little as $4 so you can't loose. Here's a couple more options...

I joined Weight Watchers in September, about a week before I turned 50. So far, I've lost 49.8 lbs and have only 4.2 lbs to go to reach my goal.

Weight Watchers is so easy, and so healthy. You don't have to give up foods you love either. I am definitely making better choices and have learned the importance of portion control and reading labels on foods.

I recommend WW to anyone and everyone who has had a problem losing weight. It really works and it's not really a diet, it's just a lifestyle change.

I know people who have had good results with WW too. I've tried it a few times but I am a *terrible* program person. It did give me a better reality check on what was too much (even healthy foods can add weight, duh!). I love their cookbooks. I thought they would be old-school, and some of them are, but there are some absolutely delicious meals too, that I would choose to serve guests even if they weren't low calorie, like maple-crusted chicken breasts and prawn stir-fry with ginger, garlic, sesame seeds, and coconut.

Where I usually get caught up is using up most of my WW points during the day, then working out (or not) and overeating at night.

My tactic now is based on a friend's trip to a Vipassana retreat, where they had fruit and tea for din din. My partner and I have been doing that for a few weeks and lost a few pounds each.
We don't overeat during the day, and tea and fruit at night is a no brainer. That gets to be the ritual (with exceptions, of course) and we don't miss other stuff. Some substitutions have been veggie soup or a lowfat/nondairy fruit smoothie. We're sleeping better, my partner's nighttime digestive probs are gone, and we wake up not much hungrier, if at all, than if we'd eaten the night before. Even if we don't lose a bunch of weight doing this, it feels like a healthy way to be.

I am still doing my low carb but eating fresh fruit to and I love soups and broths and I think that has helped me alot. I am down about five more pounds in the last three weeks to. But i still have so much more to lose though but I am working on it. I know it will take time and I have plenty of that these days since I cannot work anymore.
I have tried WW and I did good for awhile but then for some reason it seem to go all wrong for me.. I have tried the WW meals at AppleBees and they are good but WW allows to many sweets and starches for me and my body cannot tolerate those at all..My doctor ordered blood work on me and it told that I was a diabetic type 2 and i was told to stay away from sweets and starhy foods so I have. I drink alot of green tea, either hot or cold ice tea and i like that alot because its so hot here that anything cold tastes good. I have cut out my diet sodas to maybe one aweek now if that anymore...
I want to lose anywhere from 50-75 lbs. so far to total I have lost 30 already.
So anyone else out here who wants to talk dieting and eating please post here and lets chat....

my friend Cherry Bomb (a man) lost scads of weight over the last several months doing something truly annoyingly simple: he began eating unprocessed food (read healthy) , and increased his activity a little.
So, in other words, no donuts, fast food just this once, soda, crap like that. I'm annoyed because i know I'll have the best results if I do that too. But I like the donut. And its this simple rule, *dont eat crap* that could transform the corpulent in America's heartland. And the girl I see in the mirror there.

I think that most people would lose weight if they decreased their portions and got more active. I know that I do.

That's why I've never liked "diets" (aside from basic eat healthier rules that most of us already know). They just make it too complicated.

You've just described the Weight Watchers philosophy!
No special diets, just eat healthier, watch your portions, eat foods with more fiber and less sugar, and do something involving movement at least 30 minutes a day :)

I don't like that word diet either so I try not to say it to much if I can.
I mostly just cut out junk foods and white processed foods, starches and sweets and I have already lost 50 lbs. so far. I have been swimming like crazy in the pool and doing alot of water exercises to. This is about my line of exercise due to a bad back and several back surgeries.
But I agree if we cut out processed foods the weight will come off and of course that junk fast food to.

                              junk food=fat

diet coke=fat (evil evil soda company marketing ploy)

refined processed 'food' , read:donut, croisant, white bread= fat and gluten addiction.(but it feels so good for the moment ya bunch of addicts!)

bad eating schedule (a pint of ben and jerrys at midnight; every midnight)=fat

sitting in front of the computer for hours typing what I think I know=fat

I found writing down what I ate to be the most helpful. DO any of you keep track of what your eating this way? I work with a woman who is always counting calories and she's in pretty good shape.

I write EVERYTHING down, and have been since September. It only takes a few seconds after each time you eat, and it really makes you aware of how much you eat. Our motto is:
"If you bite it, write it"

Also, the "BLT"s will really do you in . . . "bites, licks, tastes" that you take every day, like just a taste while cooking, that extra dab of butter, or fishing out those last few crumbs in the bottom of the potato chip bag. They add up to pounds of fat, friends!

Ah...Yes it's challenging to stay in shape as we age! We need to eat even less calories...

The guys especially get that "belly" while most of us women get the big fat butt and thunder thighs!!
