Hey,
So I am single, attractive and just a bit over 39, and new to this dating thing.
Anyone have any tips on meeting a nice guy...online dating sites (eek... the idea makes me wanna throw up) or any suggestions on approaching guys in a store...(say a book store where all the cute guys seem to hang out)..or any other desperate measures you can think of. I'm really not desperate, just not sure where to begin.
I am new to SF, and I wondered what your experiences where to starting off meeting new people, besides at work.
Shaz

Re: Online dating or bumping into someone in the grocery store
Sat, August 13, 2005 - 10:06 PMThe on-line dating is a bit scary..........I've met my best friend on Match.com BUT nothing romantic happened between us. I usually meet guys who want to get straight to bed or they are SO FULL OF THEMSELVES!!!
I would say check out the places that you're interested in........a bookstore is a great place to start.......uh, if you like books;)
Maybe a hiking trail??? SHIT girl, you're in SF.........I'm in Flagstaff, AZ!!!
You go, girl!!! AND Good luck!! -

Re: Online dating or bumping into someone in the grocery store
Sat, August 13, 2005 - 11:43 PMWomen outnumber men three to one in SF, so consider a sex change. That should be less painful than moving anyway from the sacred city. I'm still jonesing from having left SF when I was single. Then when you make the change, think of all the gay men you can do. -

Re: Online dating or bumping into someone in the grocery store
Sun, August 14, 2005 - 8:23 AMWell, Dave...after the sex change, she might find out a big percentage of those WOMEN are gay, anyway, SF being the gender-bending capitol of the world...;o) Anyway...it's very expensive...my advice, save yer money and become Bi...broadens the playing field..

Re: Online dating or bumping into someone in the grocery store
Sun, August 14, 2005 - 8:33 AMhey...she wants some SERIOUS advice here...
I liked Flag when I visited. Older dude, maybe? lol....
My advice..it's a numbers game explore all avenues. Online and off. Don't sit home, you won't meet anyone there but the mailman or meter-checker..UPS guy..(hey, they're cute)..
Smile and approach people from a friend rather than dating angle. If the sexual chemistry is there, you'll both feel it. Explore your interests. I like thrifting and I met a great guy in a thrift store...I met another guy on my mountain bike...tons of cute guys ride and not that many women...
The main thing is to get out and be open...have fun! I'm goin' huntin' myself today...;o)) -

Re: Online dating or bumping into someone in the grocery store
Sun, August 14, 2005 - 11:39 AMThanks Alice,
I'll go with my gut on this one...just wondered if anyone had tried match.com or eharmony.com. (I haven't heard many good things about them, I must admit)
I think I'll give it a miss and go walk my puppy...and brush the dust off my bike. Cool idea.

Re: Online dating or bumping into someone in the grocery store
Sun, August 14, 2005 - 12:29 PMOk...I know people who have met their husband/wife/bf/gf online. I tried Match with so so luck. I'm better meeting in person.
Yahoo personals? A guy I know got married last year when he answered a listing. Hey...people have met on Tribe !! or at Burning Man....
Dogs...great idea. I have a vintage vw and tons of guys go to car shows...
good site for friends/dates without the "date" pressure...(well this is better in SoCal but you never know...)

Re: Online dating or bumping into someone in the grocery store
Sun, August 14, 2005 - 10:36 AMDear heart, I just have to say this:
I have a real hard time taking the "attractive" part seriously whenever I look at the pic with the green face and empty eye sockets... Can you give me something else to go on?
Ah, forget it. The only guys I know in SF are gay, anyway... They'd only love you for your Halloween drag.

Re: Online dating or bumping into someone in the grocery store
Mon, August 15, 2005 - 11:00 AMbut serously Shaz, there are lots of dance clubs in SF. I think most guys start there. What kind of hobbies do you have? You know you can volunteer at the Academy of Sciences and meet all sorts of men who both have jobs and are interesting. -

Re: Online dating or bumping into someone in the grocery store
Mon, August 15, 2005 - 11:20 AMDance clubs don't interest me, but I just may hang out at Green apple...love that place.
Surely there is one cute guy I can bump into as we stumble around the shelves together.
I just had the idea that Americans were a little more guarded (I'm an alien - says so on my greencard) and maybe think I was a 'floozy' or something.
Such a fine line between 'flooziness' and friendliness here in the US.
Thanks for the suggestions though.

Re: Online dating or bumping into someone in the grocery store
Mon, August 15, 2005 - 11:48 AMThat explains a lot. I had a hard time "bumping into women" in public. Part of that is ineptitude and shyness, but also as you point out women don't like to think a guy can put down a book and pick up a woman so easily. -

Re: Online dating or bumping into someone in the grocery store
Wed, November 16, 2005 - 4:36 PMWhat/where is green apple? this is the second time I have heard of it.
Since the odeon closed I find it hard to find a club I like, (I don't drink much)
Okcupid.com is free and works supriseingly well. I am older than most of the demographic ,so not a lot of matches tho'. -

Re: Online dating or bumping into someone in the grocery store
Thu, November 17, 2005 - 9:44 AMI've found that entusiast groups are a great place to meet new friends, that often turn into more. If you are really into an activity, say, Burning Man, fencing, cycling, matrial arts, something that requires a passionate spirit, and you would do those activities for yourself anyway, it's easier for other enthusiasts to find you and fall in love with you. It happened to me.... well, every time! And there's a comfort level there with people you already have something in common with. -

Sat, December 3, 2005 - 8:10 PMI agree. My relationship started on a forum for the band Rush. We started as friends and months later, it moved into head over heels looooove.
We've been shacking up now for over a year.

Re: Online dating or bumping into someone in the grocery store
Mon, December 5, 2005 - 7:48 AMI actually met one of my current sweeties on an online dating site. We don't have a standard ride-off-into-the-sunset relationship, but it's quite lovely in its own way.
I've dealt with a lot of creeps, though, and gotten some completely unbelievable responses. The screen tends to grant you both anonymity and a certain distance from the person on the other end, so it's sometimes easy to forget that you're dealing with actual human beings.
In fact, I was sitting around with some friends one night talking about online dating, and I decided to create the Dating Horrors blog. If you feel like reading some real horror stories, drop on by-- www.datinghorrors.com
